How You Can Help Shelter Dogs This Holiday Season

The holidays bring our families together to celebrate with delicious hot meals, generous presents and warm, fuzzy feelings. Unfortunately, a lot of dogs don’t have families or homes to celebrate in.

There are currently around 70 million stray animals in the United States, and around seven million dogs and cats enter the nation’s 3,500 shelters a year, according to the Humane Society.

Here’s what you can do this year to help these animals in their time of need and during the season of giving.

1. Donate

This is a huge one. The best kind of donation you can make is monetary, but supplies and your time will also be greatly appreciated by your local shelter.

Your money will go to food, blankets, medical supplies and any other necessities that the shelters may need to help care for so many animals.

If you wanted to donate pet supplies, here’s a list of what may be helpful to your local shelter:

  • Old blankets and towels
  • Dog food
  • Cat food
  • Treats
  • Toys, bones
  • Crates
  • Collars/leashes
  • Food bowls

If you wanted to donate your time, contact your local shelter and ask how you can apply to volunteer. This would also be a great activity to do with your family.

2. Foster

If you’re not looking to adopt, you should consider fostering a shelter animal during the holidays. The shelters get crowded, and if you could temporarily provide a homeless pet with a warm bed and loving family, it would really help both the pet and the shelter out.

You and your foster pet can enjoy each other’s company for the time being until someone wants to adopt the animal. Who knows? Maybe you’ll fall in love and keep it.

3. ADOPT

Last but certainly not least, ADOPT a shelter animal. Animals make great gifts, but please only give them to someone who will give them a good home and can take care of them.

If you have been looking for a pet for your kids or other family members, you should absolutely adopt instead of shopping. These homeless animals desperately need families.
